'Two central concerns of all
thinkers, the search for truth and the search for justice and peace,
are dealt with by one of the most distinguished philosophers of
religion of our time. The chapter on Christianity and Islam, in
particular, raises very interesting and challenging issues that
Muslim scholars need to address today.'
Seyed Amir Akrami, Lecturer of Islamic Studies, Al-Mahdi Institute,
Birmingham
'Like hardly anyone else John
Hick has inspired the contemporary philosophy of religion and theology
of religions, that is interpretation of a world of diverse faiths.
Seen against some fashionable trends in current theology, with all
their kowtows to relativistic presuppositions, John Hick's search
for universal truth and globally valid moral standards is, despite
some of his unorthodox conclusions, far more in line with the intellectual
thrust of the theological tradition than the post-modern defenders
of neo-'orthodoxy'. Hick strives for a 'believable Christianity',
which will no doubt attract criticism but perhaps even more so wholehearted
assent from people inside and outside the churches.'
Perry Schmidt-Leukel, Professor of Systematic Theology and Religious
Studies and Chair of World Religions for Peace, University of Glasgow

"The New Frontier has a freshness
about it. It is a small book that both breaks new ground and offers
to those familiar with Hick's corpus a summary of the current state
of his remarkable life-work. As a readily accessible book, it also
provides the newcomer among both general and more 'theological'
readers with a stimulating 'way in' to his thinking."
Reviews in Religion and Theology
"It is a far cry from the dry technical prose of much theological
and philosophical writing, especially in the science-theology field,
whilst still being careful, balanced and rigorous in the best academic
tradition. But above all, it is provocative and deeply stimulating.
. . As a professional scientist, I found my own materialist tendencies
shifting uneasily under the force of his logic. Hick has provided
an important and accessible contribution to the science-theology
debate which will broaden outlooks and challenge assumptions."
Mark Harris in Oriel College Record

'John Hick is undoubtedly the greatest living
philosopher of global religion. This collection of essays gives
a very clear and readable of his mature views, and will be eagerly
read by his many admirers.' Keith Ward, Regius Professor of Divinity,
University of Oxford
'Who or What is God? is a choice selection
of John Hick's substantial essays. Professor Hick is forthright
as ever in advocacy while at the same time always engagingly modest:
"My own version is of course not the only version, and there is
endless scope for constructive discussion among liberal thinkers."
Not recommended for readers who are nervous of sanity in theology
and church.' George Newlands, Professor of Divinity, University
of Glasgow

and important problems about religion...I would recommend the book
to anyone who is interested in religion, science and spirituality'

'In
this sharply argued and bracing book, John Hick considers the range
of human religious experience and tries to make sense of it, rejecting
in particular attempts based on neuroscience to debunk it. His writing
is assured, well-informed, and provocative. This book is certain
to generate lively debate.' - Professor Adrian Moore, University
of Oxford
'An
optimistic, provocative and profound book.' - Beverley Clack,
